Ubiik Inc., a wireless communications technology company, today announced the launch of the Zephyr platform, designed for low power consumption SCADA use cases in water & wastewater, irrigation, electricity and oil & gas.
In response to the continued growth of connectivity requirements in isolated locations, Ubiik has developed Zephyr for operation at sites which are powered by solar and battery. Designed to be cost-effective and compact, the Zephyr platform comprises of standard narrowband base and remote radios, a variant which allows for external duplexing and a 1+1 variant for mission critical use cases.
“Our customers in irrigation, water utilities and oil & gas often have sites which are off grid but require reliable connectivity. Developing a radio which offered very low power consumption to allow for solar power operation became a priority for our team,” says Kok Heng Loh, Chief Operating Officer at Ubiik Mimomax. “In addition to the low power draw, the Zephyr platform also has a 5W transmit power and a range of up to 100km which is vital for many of these sites in isolated locations.”
The Zephyr platform has been built with a focus on enhanced security, offering AES-256, the industry gold standard for symmetric encryption, plus several other security features including RADIUS authentication and Hardware Unique Keys. The inclusion of Terminal Server for Serial to IP conversion ensures support for legacy customer devices and the radio offers simultaneous, segregated connectivity for multiple polling systems via ethernet or serial.
“Our main aim was to engineer a robust radio that was fit-for-purpose when it came to SCADA and automation requiring low power consumption. However, drawing from our expertise in high-capacity wireless communications, we also wanted to deliver a higher data throughput than what is traditionally available in legacy SCADA radios,” says Mr. Loh. “The Zephyr platform can operate up to 64QAM modulation, providing far greater throughput and therefore opening up opportunities for our customers to connect hundreds of end devices or even multiple polling systems in a single network.”

The Zephyr platform will be launched for the North American market during an upcoming webinar on October 8th and can be viewed in-person at the Ubiik Mimomax booth (#10) at Comms Connect in Melbourne Australia, October 14-15.
