Ubiik Secures Four New AMI Contracts Worth US$36.5M, Introducing Dual-Mode LPWAN Breakthrough for Smart Metering
Taipei, Taiwan

Taipei, Taiwan – July 22, 2025 — Ubiik, a leading provider of wireless communication technologies spanning AMI, private LTE, and mission-critical narrowband systems for utilities, today announced it has secured four additional AMI contracts in Taiwan since September 2024, bringing in a total contract value of US$36.5 million. With these wins, Ubiik’s cumulative volume in Taiwan’s largest nationwide IoT initiative now exceeds 2 million smart meters — valued at over US$100 million since 2018.
The newly awarded contracts include 750,000 units using Ubiik’s Weightless™ LPWAN technology, reaffirming its leadership in Taiwan’s AMI sector. In addition, 100,000 units will be deployed using NB-IoT.
In a major product milestone, Ubiik unveiled the Nimbus 230, a dual-mode module that seamlessly combines NB-IoT and Weightless technologies. Based on Ubiik’s proven NB-IoT module Nimbus 220, the new Nimbus 230 integrates the company’s Weightless protocol stack to offer automatic failover and enhanced network resilience for smart meters connected via public cellular networks.
“We’re proud to maintain our position as Taiwan’s AMI market leader while continuing to innovate for the future,” said TH Peng, CEO of Ubiik. “Nimbus 230 is a game-changer — it gives utilities around the world a cost-effective, reliable fallback when NB-IoT coverage is lacking or unavailable.”
Prior to the recent 4 contracts, Ubiik has been awarded contracts totaling over 1.16 million AMI endpoints since 2018, with full deployment expected to complete by late 2026. As Taiwan’s largest nationwide IoT initiative, these projects have solidified Ubiik’s role as a key enabler of the country’s smart grid modernization. It currently processes more than 5 million meter readings every hour, almost 4 billion every month.
Between 2018 and 2022, about 10% of awarded endpoints were designed to operate over NB-IoT, as required by the tenders’ requirement, through public telcos. However, Ubiik experienced persistent challenges with coverage gaps, network congestion, and lack of responsive support from telecom operators. In response, Ubiik began development of a Weightless/NB-IoT hybrid module in 2022, culminating in today’s announcement of Nimbus 230.
“With fully-acknowledged bidirectional communication, innovative modulation techniques for best-in-class sensitivity, and advanced radio resource scheduling for high network efficiency and capacity, Weightless is one of the most advanced LPWAN technologies available and is exceptionally well-suited for smart metering, as demonstrated by our current network reliably collecting more than 1,000 meter readings every second” said Fabien Petitgrand, CTO of Ubiik. “By integrating it with NB-IoT in the same module, we deliver an unmatched level of reliability and coverage flexibility for utilities.”
In addition to the field deployment of Nimbus 230 beginning in late 2025 across Taiwan, Ubiik is expanding its Weightless AMI business into the EMEA region, aiming to offer its dual-mode technology to markets where the unlicensed 863–870 MHz SRD band can be leveraged.
